The University of California received its first Sea Grant project funds in 1968. In 1970 the University of California requested the National Science Foundation to designate the University as a Sea Grant Institution, and it received the designation in 1973. In July 1970, the University submitted a proposal to the Office of Sea Grant Programs, NSF for Sea Grant Institutional funds. In subsequent years, Sea Grant funds were administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The 1970 proposal and subsequent annual proposals were funded. The accession consists of UC Sea Grant proposals submitted on behalf of the University by the Institute of Marine Resources from 1970-1982.
